Loving books

I’ll admit it: I don’t have time to read all that much. In fact, during academic year, I can barley find time to sleep. But when summer vacation knocks at my door, I know it’s time to pay a visit to the library again.

And I love the library! Really, even the bravest bookworm wouldn’t admit it so wholeheartedly. In fact, I guess the one thing that draws me to the library again and again is the mood of the entire space. The peacefulness. The feeling that time stays still. The fact that you can hear your own thoughts in that quiet ambiance.

-----------------------------
"Having fun isn't hard when you've got a library card." (Tavi's tumblr)
-----------------------------

Actually, the one feature that makes library so attractive for me is that I can try the books. Just like you try clothes. You read a few pages. Continue if you like. If you don’t, no big deal. You can pick something else. No regrets, no waste of money.

From time to time, I find a book I love. Or two, or three. These are the ones I usually go and buy, so that I can have them at home. Read them anytime. Admire them on the shelf. Decisions made after trying them out first. Just like you do with clothes.

These days, I am reading (read: devouring) anything that Haruki Murakami wrote. I have just finished reading Dance, Dance, Dance and it was fantastic! This site is an amazing resource to obsess about his work time and time again.

Generally, I love the writing of Japanese authors and South-American ones. I can’t put my finger on it, there’s a certain flavor in their books that I find particularly appealing.

So, tell us...

Who are your favorite authors?

P.S. I am compiling an update for this post on comment moderation, which was very well received and highly commented. I will continue the series about other blogging issues later this week. So keep an eye out for it.

  3. I like the idea of the library, but the books smell! I can't stand it, so I tend to purchase my books new.

I'm like you: love reading, but don't have much time to read. I've been taking summer classes, so I didn't get a chance to read anything but textbooks in the summer. So sad.

    F. Scott Fitzgerald is my favorite author. The Great Gatsby is probably my favorite book. Other than that, I like a bunch of random, hodge podge stuff!

  4. Love books. Currently I'm reading The Blind Assasin, Colors Insulting to Nature, and Eat Pray Love.

I think my favourite author is Khaled Hosseini. A Thousand Splendid Suns was so sad and beautiful.

  5. ^haha, I agree, I hate the smell. But I used to spend a lot of time in the library on Sundays as a kid as my dad read the NY Times, so whenever I smell it I think of that - which is totally weird, I know.

I'm currently on a classics kick. I got this great collection of textile inspired cloth-bound classics and I'm making my way through them, b/c nothing that pretty should remain unused. :)

  7. My "serious" favorite authors; C.S. Lewis, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Harper Lee, Jane Austen.

Guilty pleasures: Sarah Dessean, Nicholas Sparks, Stephenie Meyer (I know, Twilight, but I liked it anyway!)

Next Up: The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! Would love if you said hello again! I am now a follower of yours :)

  10. Great post!

Fav authors? I'm torn on this. I'd have to do with Mitch Albom. I think I pick books like I view politics... it's a per topic/issue, rather than all or nothing for one person/party.

  11. i love books too. i'm currently into nonfiction, but what i like changes all the time.

  12. I like the idea of 'trying on' books. I like for my 'library' to be full of things I love.
Haruki Murakami is pretty amazing, I just got into him last summer.

  13. I love reading..and I love books! I'm more into buying than borrowing though. I feel better reading them if I know that its mine for some reason. But when I do go to libraries or used bookshops, that's where I find and read pages first before going out to buy them for myself.

Right now, I'm currently into Judith McNaught. I'm pretty diverse with the books I read, but for now I'm leaning more to historical/contemporary romance novels. :)

  15. @nookie: hehe, Rebreanu imi aduce aminte de liceu & nu am auzit de Linda Grant dar imi place cum suna titlul cartii :D

BLOGGER HELP: You can add color in the background of the text like I did on the Vika interview by adding this code: <div style="background: #??????; color: #??????;"> INSERT TEXT</div> where #?????? means the hex html color code of the color you want. This tabel illustrates the changes in codes between HTML color codes and decimal RGB color codes. Hope it helps!

    &you're sooo welcome!

@Ashley: Haha, funny you said that! I'm not very fond of the smell of old book either... so I "try on" the new ones! :)) I think I'm lucky, the stock is very up-to-date. I remember reading the Great Gatsby on a summer break in highschool & liking it. Cheers to that!

@Nedda Ebo: Eat Pray Love is pretty good, I read it too last year I think. It is one of the books I bought for the "home library". I didn't read A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini but I heard good reviews about it. Should definitely put it on the reading list!

@K_Chanel: I don't think that's necessarily weird, memories are often associated with particular smells. & like I said above, I try to avoid the smell of old books too. Aww, I LOVE what you said about the collection of textile inspired cloth-bound classics. I think it must be a pleasure to go through them!

@INTRO TO MY LIFE: Great point! Actually, few weeks before classes ended, I carried "The lovely bones" by Alice Sebold with me all the time and read on the bus because it was just so captivating!

@Jenna: For the "serious" favorite authors: yes, yes, yes, yes! Haha, I love how you have some authors included in the "guilty pleasure category". My guilty pleasure category includes various (&sometimes random) chick-lit authors. Yeah...
Will definitely stop by your blog again! Thank you!

    @chaoskontrolowany: Glad you enjoyed!

@Angeles Almuna Design: You're such a sweetie! Talk to you soon!

@minnja: I know, books are great, but photos + books? Even better!

@Ivy: What an interesting approach! I didn't read anything by Mitch Albom but I think I should definitely get my hands on something he wrote.

@simplychic: Books are so much fun because they offer endless possibilities! I switch from genre to genre all the time too! Kind of depends on the mood I'm in that day...

@Indie.Tea: "Trying on" books is a good strategy, maybe you should see how it works for you too? And in the "books I love" category goes anything that Haruki wrote. I stayed up late last night to reading from "A Wild Sheep Chase".

  17. @raeny: I see, that is very good! Also, it's great to see I'm not the only one reading a little bit from a specific book before buying it for myself. & I love romance novels! Aww! But I have to be in the right mood for that, I'll admit! :D If I'm not, I'll just try a different genre and come back to reading romance when I have the right mindset :)

J.: I am enthusiastic about your enthusiasm! (If that makes any sense :D) So thank you!

Both of you sweeties: I just have to read something written by the authors your mentioned. So many new reading perspectives are opening up with this post! Thank you!
    Kisses!

ching: Really? That is one of the coolest library-related things I ever heard! Wink! I say classics are the best choice! {Confession: I could never get enough of Poe's writing for example, haha} xxo

  25. I love books. I work in two libraries and go to library school. I don't read nearly enough these day. When school starts...I might forgo pleasure reading or read a few things really slow. I prefer the public library for my book borrowing over the university's collection. I have many favorite authors. I could go on forever on this subject!

@Googlover/keishua: Wow, so you are surrounded by books everyday! How cool is that? I envy you a tiny little bit now, haha!

    @hiven: You're lovely too!

@ARA: That's so cool, I have to read something written by him too!

@Lisa: Did you read my mind or something? I enjoy reading biographies so much! It's like you get to peek in another person's life. I heard Malcom Gladwell is that good too.

@QuiteQuaint: Ah, don't feel embarassed about that! I usually need to take proper time away from the internet to be able to concentrate only on reading. & this can be quite hard. So I know what you're saying. Try reading in a different environment even you don't commute; the park is the perfect place to start!

@La pépite modeuse: Jane Austen is so popular around here! Glad you liked the photo with Gwyneth! Kisses!

  31. I tend to like books that are a bit tongue n' cheek, a tad ironic but still with some heart with it, Douglas Coupland and Nick Hornby are big faves

  32. I love reading but unfortunately I haven't had much time lately.. Well, for the last couple years I've been mostly reading the same books over and over again. Now my friend borrowed few books to me, the autobiography of David Bowie and two Oscar Wilde's books. I'm trying to find some time to read time... :D These photos you posted are awesome!
And yeah, I love libraries. I've lately borrowed more CDs and DVDs than books.. But I love that it's free to borrow from library. You can try everything, as you said.. I probably wouldn't ever buy just some random books or DVDs or CDs from stores if I didn't know they are good. x
