It's Been a Long and Beautiful Summer

“I spent part of my childhood on a farm.” said Karl after the Chanel SS 2010 show. Well, monsieur, you've outdone yourself if that's even possible. I wasn't expecting to actually like the collection, but there's something about it, that easy way of transitioning from one texture to another, to nonchalantly mix evening dresses with clogs. Of course, Chanel, but still... clogs! I wonder whether is there something left that Karl couldn't pull out successfully. I mean, is anything left to interpret? I think I might be asking myself this question after each new collection and still find no reasonable answer. This man can do anything. Umm, please adopt me? Yeah...

And of course, as always, but hey I am gratefull, the internet is dripping with photos from the Chanel show: outfits, details, models, backstage action, it's all here for our viewing (and sighing) pleasure:

For obvious reasons, only Karl can put the words
Chanel and farm into them same sentence with high class. Ok, now where's that haystack??

Interview: Uma Turan - Milliner

I discovered Uma Turan's website a while ago and was instantly captivated by everything I saw. Of course, my very first idea was to do a post about her. But then I thought maybe I should try asking for an interview instead? So imagine my happiness when she agreed to answer some questions from me. Work related, but not only. I hope this will be as inspiring for you as it was for me.

♠ How do you see the relation between a hat and the rest of an outfit (clothes, shoes, bag, attitude)?
What you wear and how you wear an outfit tells all about you and your attitude and clothes and accessories of course complete each other. I can see how wonderfully cut black dress, pair of stilettos and a little black beret with bow would look fantastic. If you are in a mood of walking around the town but just want a little space from the crowd of people, wear a big floppy felt hat. You can be noticeable or discreet, it is your choice! Also great hat would make an ordinary outfit look like a million dollars. Whenever I wear a luxurious hat I always feel very special and complete.

♠ You first began studying theatrical millinery. How is it different in terms of requirements or freedom to create?
Theatrical millinery teaches you a lot of different techniques and of course you have a better understanding of how the modern pieces are based on theatrical pieces and how they were structured. My first collection was based on Elizabethan Period where I used my theatrical millinery knowledge. If you are trying to create an exact copy of a theatrical piece you have to be quite precise about the style, size and the most importantly the fabric which reflects the period.

♠ What is the most important thing you have learned while working with Stephen Jones?
When it was production time where I had to replicate pieces, I actually understood and adopted the technique. Also Stephen Jones collaborated with so many great designers, it was a fantastic learning experience in terms of understanding the application of style. Also working with many different kinds of materials you do remember the next time how the fabric is going to behave! I learnt a number of and tricks that you don’t get to learn in college. Mr Jones himself has always been an inspiration for me with his wonderful personality.

♠ How do you build a relation with your clients so that their wishes are fulfilled but also put your creative vision into it?
I always let my clients explain what they actually want. I show the materials, hat blocks, jewels, and the pieces (hat pins, broaches, vintage beads and laces, etc.) that I collect from the antique markets bit like a magpie! Sometimes they just look at my hats and say they quite like this or that style I have on my large collection but with the fabric of their choice, I am very honest if I think they would not suit to the style they want I would tell them straight away. So far I had some fantastic clients and they have mostly come back again with a friend.

♠ Where do you get inspiration from?
I do get inspired by anything that makes me happy and excited or sad and thoughtful. Love, emotions, friends, art, travelling, history, flowers, objects, (particularly special jewels and gold work), photographs, opera, music and more ... it can be anything to be honest. Sometimes I would find a shoe buckle or scrap material and start the piece with that. Then the chain of thoughts and materials add on to each other. The other day I lit my fig scented candle and the smell of the candle made me think of my long wonderful summer holidays in Turkey where I born, when I was seven years old and had my little sister with me sitting by the sea and we found a real pearl in a shell. Extraordinary! I just got up and found my pearl box and made a little headpiece with pearls.

♠ Who do you admire the most, in or outside the industry?
Stephen Jones. I admire his technique, his sense of style and his great personality. It was so much fun working with him. Outside, I have quite a few favourites as you can imagine. I do love details so I think Christian Louboutin’s shoes are absolutely gorgeous.

♠ What do you do in your spare time?
I love visiting romantic cities, photography, making jewellery and spending time with my friends in my spare time.

♠ Do you have a personal hat collection? If you do, tell us about it.
Yes, I do have a little collection of vintage French felt berets and some hats with lace. Also I have couple of fur hats that I love.

♠ Does your personal style influence what you create? If so, in what way?
My personal style is quite minimal but I have another Uma in my thoughts sometimes who would be Marie Antoinette or who would be in her 1950’s Balenciaga outfit. Therefore I do have mixture of very minimal hats as well as rather over the top pieces.

♠ What would your advice be for someone who wants to do what you do?
I would suggest them to have a little corner where they collect lots of fabric, feathers and bits and pieces and try to create something they love. There are some wonderful evening and part time courses available to explore the world of millinery. I would suggest trying out a few classes at those before studying millinery full time.

The Dot Com Renaissance

When it comes to magazines, it's clear: I'm in for photo obsessing, gazing at very detail, as tiny as it may be, approximating and anticipating what could be on the next page. But I must confess, as much as I enjoy browsing online scans from magazine across the planet, I can't help feeling a little guilty. Scanning is not something the magazines themselves have control upon. It's sad, because once the mag wasn't supposed to be all available (at least the last issue) online for free, it does steal something from it. And from those who buy it, be it in print or not. Don't you ever feel it's not right but can't help clicking on the larger image because you're just a few seconds away from more visual delicacies?

I appreciate what the internet can offer every day, keeping us connected to the world wherever we are, but some values should exist. I vote guilty in my own name here, but I would love to just pretend I have an evil twin in my head who is doing all the dirty job. Aren't the mag scans just another form of stealing? I scan mags too every now and then if I have something in my possession which is worth sharing... but isn't this similar to illegal downloads? And, to put it all out here, these above are a few scans that surfaced, yet again, from the latest issue of Lula Magazine.

Have a great week everyone! Make it happen!

Karl Would So Agree On This

When it comes to nail polish I am total and complete maniac. And I admit it. On heavy rotation there are six different colors ranging from nude to pitch-black, while the rest of a dozen bottles are stashed in a drawer to avoid bumping into them all day for safe keeping. Anyway, the latest hunt focused on a light, subtle green shade. It was quite hard to scoop out, since everything is so brightly colored this days, the eyes are popping out of the head. If colors are so dramatic, do we have to keep them as such on the nails too? Hope not. Especially since a barely insinuated hue completes perfectly a power-color. Case in point, Chanel Fall 09. Ok, so my idea with this nail polish miiight have its origin here. Ok, definitely.

It might be said that this green color is more suitable in springtime, or summertime for that matter but I love to bring those two right into autumn with me. Come along, now!

2 years of Sweet Fancy Treat today!

anniversary collage ♠ top left photo&logos: mine, all the rest lolita and tatielle ♠

On this very day, back in 2007, I was hitting the Publish button for the first post on Sweet Fancy Treat. I had absolutely no idea whatsoever what I should do, how was I supposed to organize myself and so on. Fact is, since then, things have changed so-so much it's hard to believe. First thing, I have learned thousands of new things (no exaggerations), virtually met so many new people, established connections and was totally inspired by each one of them. Each day, the gift of connecting instantly with the world and sharing opinions is such a great thing to do, we barely appreciate it because we take it as granted. I mean, how would the world function without the internet to connect us all in a matter of seconds? How? I am not thinking superficial, just taking a second to appreciate what has been the basis of my learning for the last couple of years and saying thank you to all of you out there who take time and read this and get in touch with me by emails or messages. Thank you greatest!
All these aside and taking into consideration the fact that this is the 792 post on the site, I will make a short summary of all the writing I have put up here. I would totally like to insist on using the term of site instead of blog because I believe in things evolving. I will take this to the next level and I am sure this means a whole lot more work to do. Sure, I will still share my thoughts, because the writing part should still be a little subjective since this is a self-fueled site, but even so! I think I can strive a bit more than just center it all around my life. Actually, even outfits or photos of myself don't appear that often as they once did. One reason for this is that I try to make it be less self-centered and move into objectivity. I plan on focusing much more on writing longer posts. Just not letting aside qualityphotos: I like them to be good and as many as possible. About the photos, I switched layouts some time ago so that photos now appear indecently large, so that all of you have what to stare at. Come on, you know you like huge photos and so do I! That is why going through older posts, they will pop out as inappropriate for this particular layout, but if you click on them, their true nature will be revealed!
This being said, let's go a bit through the archives and outline some of the most important things that were featured here. The most important are those listed just below the header and I am most convinced they are the essence of this site. So, these are just skimpy selections, to see all the posts, just click on the category in the tag cloud spinning on the right of the page!

With these two categories I have covered the essence of what you can find browsing through the archives. Some of these are labeled with one or more of the following: On the Runway (103 posts: strictly what the title states), Photo (162 posts: some are so eye-candy you won't take your eyes off them), Inspiration (326 with this label: well, all of the posts actually, but I try to be as selective as humanly possible), Life (226 posts: include thought-challenging, daily questions), Magazines (67 posts: on & offline prints/scans), Attitude (187 posts: on how to approach things), Coffee break (188 posts: focus on relaxation and pleasure) and of course, the Fashion label hitting a massive 503 posts. And this is only scratching the surface! For more, just spin around the tag cloud and delight yourself with labels for each seasons, what I bought today, project, wish, or anything else strikes you fancy!

Also, the Transitions... pieces I wrote for this Fall is pretty rad too, if I may say so myself: How to find your fashion mojo and Polka Perfection.

Will keep building this site up, piling on written pieces and great visuals to come with them, until each and every post becomes so special it's a celebration in itself

Thanks for reading and checking in, I appreciate it lots!

I would love to hear what you have to say! Contact me by email: daiane@sweetfancytreat.com or let's tweet away!

Links à la Mode: The Dos and Don’ts of Style

Edited by Debutante Clothing

I just turned 35. It’s a landmark year not just chronologically, but style wise. I am now approaching that next age bracket in the How to Dress for Your Age features in mags. You know the ones. Thank goodness for my blogger pals here at Independent Fashion Bloggers. You’ll find some of the best style guides here this week. Guides such as Mischief My Dear’s advice on finding the perfect LBD and Fasshonaburu’s Spring 2010 trends guide. But beware the urge to dress too sexy. 39th and Broadway tells you why toddlers and stilletos don’t mix, and Squareectomy questions the taste level of visible thongs. Enjoy!
